What is Sensory Integration?
It is a neurological process in which the central nervous system receives information from one’s body (e.g. muscles, joints, skin, mouth, position of the head, etc.) and the environment (sound, light, objects, textures, etc.), organizes, integrates with a other inputs, and generates a response according to the sensations received. This process allows the individual to effectively engage in a variety of occupations. The sensory systems (tactile, auditory, visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular) are responsible for carrying the sensations to the nervous system. The constant interaction between the individual and the environment increases in complexity, building the foundation for the development of new skills at various levels of performance (motor, cognitive, socio-emotional, social interactions, etc).
Difficulties with integrating sensory information can significantly impact the child’s performance in daily activities, such as dressing, feeding, writing, attention to class, emotional self-regulation, interaction with peers, speech, coordination of movements, and more.

¿Qué es Integración Sensorial?
Es un proceso neurológico por medio del cual el sistema nervioso central recibe información proveniente del propio cuerpo (músculos, articulaciones, piel, boca, posición de la cabeza, etc.) y del ambiente (ruido, luz, objetos, texturas, etc.), la organiza, la integra con otros estímulos, y produce una respuesta adecuada a dichas sensaciones permitiendo el desempeño efectivo en una variedad de ocupaciones. Los sistemas sensoriales (táctil, auditivo, visual, propioceptivo, y vestibular) son los encargados de transmitir estas sensaciones al sistema nervioso. La constante interacción del individuo con el ambiente crece en complejidad, formando una base sobre la cual se construyen nuevas habilidades en varios niveles de desarrollo (motor, cognitivo, socio-emocional, interacción social, etc.).
La dificultad para integrar esta información sensorial puede impactar significativamente el desempeño del niño en su vida diaria, afectando habilidades tales como la capacidad para vestirse, comer, escribir, atender a clase, autorregularse emocionalmente, relacionarse con otros niños, hablar, y coordinar movimientos, entre otras.
