Components of Movement
Principles of Neurodevelopmental Treatment

This course is open to 34 therapists (Physical therapists, Occupational therapists, and Assistants).
This is a one week course on the treatment of children with cerebral palsy (also applicable to babies). It is designed to give to cover the following:
- NDT theoretical background.
- Characteristics of different types of cerebral palsy.
- Components of typical and atypical motor development. These lectures include kinesiological aspects of motor development.
- Practice of NDT facilitation techniques on other participants.
- On Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the course instructor will evaluate and treat a child with cerebral palsy in front of the class.

Program Objectives:
The Participant Shall:
- Gain an understanding of the intricate subtle components of typical and atypical motor development and their interplay.
- Learn to recognize compensations and deviations from typical movements.
- Practice methods of facilitating desired movements while inhibiting undesired movement activity.
- Gain an awareness of the principles of assessment and treatment used in NDT and the appropriate application of these principles.
- Observe and critically analyze demonstrations of patient assessment, treatment techniques and sequences.
Required Reading:
- Facilitation Techniques Based on NDT Principles, by Lois Bly. Will be included in the cost of tuition and handed out on the first day of class. Or, if preferred, can be ordered online at www.proedinc.com.

About the Instructor
LOIS BLY
MA, PT, NDT Coordinator Instructor
Lois Bly, MA, PT, is an internationally respected NDT Coordinator-Instructor and clinician who offers seminars, workshops and NDT Certification courses throughout the US, Canada, South America, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong and South Africa. Ms. Bly was certified in Neuro-Developmental Treatment by the Bobaths in London and received her NDT Instructor’s Certification in Switzerland from Mary Quinton and Dr. Elizabeth Kong. Ms. Bly received the NDTA Award of Excellence in 2000. She received her Master’s degree in Motor Learning from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Lois has authored several publications including: MONOGRAPH: The Components of Normal Movement During the First Year of Life and Abnormal Motor Development, Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association, Inc., Chicago, 1983; A Historical & Current View of the Basis of NDT, Pediatric Physical Therapy, Williams and Wilkins, Vol. 3:3, Fall 1991, pp 131-135; Motor Skills Acquisition in the First Year: An Illustrated Guide to Normal Development, Therapy Skill Builders, Tucson, 1994 as well as several others. |
