Chatterpillars is a social skills program that contains the infrastructure necessary to run a social skills group successfully and efficiently. It is essentially a series of "structured play dates" in clinical and community settings for children ages 4 to 11. The underlying idea of Chatterpillars is to create opportunities for socializing in as naturalistic a setting as possible. The social skills staff helps participants increase their self-awareness in social situations via videotape feedback and an accompanying Chatterpillars Scrapbook that chronicles group experiences while providing "subtle" suggestions to improve upon the captured scenarios.
The primary goals of the program are simple. Over the course of 38 sessions, Chatterpillars will help to:
- Enrich positive social experiences children have at home, school, and during extracurricular activities
- Foster ongoing social skills development
- Train parents to identify and implement the key elements necessary for successful play dates and learn how to write stories for the Chatterpillars’ Scrapbook.
